My "Before Origins, I will..." Goal

Postby Black Jack Rackham » Fri May 24, 2013 11:33 pm

Got into a conversation on FB about Arturo Perez-Reverte (specifically the Alatriste movie with Viggo Mortensen) and that got me thinking about the entire Capitan Alatriste series (or as many as I have, that being the novels that have been translated into english, Captain Alatriste, Purity of Blood, Sun over Breda, The King's Gold, The Cavalier in the Yellow Doublet, and The Pirates of the Levante, (though I hear The Assassin's Bridge should be out soon))

So I decided, there are only 6 books and I have two and a half weeks. I'm gonna re-read them all. WOOO!

I like Perez-Reverte, but he can't write an ending, I've loved all of the books that I've read, but the ending always seem to disappoint.

Hmm, that's odd my "you-can't-write-an-ending-to-save-your-life" author is Steven King. I always thought Perez-Reverte did a fine job.

It took me a while with Capitan Alatriste to figure out that his ambling pace is deliberate. I think he's trying to give you the feel of what it was like to live in Spain at the time. Its both laxidasical and rushed at the same time. The tension is very anxiety producing for me.

I want to try to finish up my last chapter of my 7th Sea fanfic.

I didn't really think I had a goal, but except for buying a book to read while away, I did what shopping I needed to do yesterday and got myself some new clothes! So either tomorrow or Monday I'll hit the book store and I'll be all done!

Do something shocking: check. Print all gaming materials: check wait! Uncheck due to changes in stats. Get healthy:. Working on it. (just after effects of a cold). Find new old games to drag along for down time: check. Assemble wardrobe: check. Empty car: check. Fuel up: check. Pick up comics before trip:. Next stop. Deposit checks from IRS: just arrived next next stop.

Got to the book store, found 3 new books to read, though the one I went for is still only available in hardback, so I didn't get it. No worries though, as she had another one in paperback that I hadn't read yet, and it is a continuation of a series I am enjoying, so I'm happy! Same with the other 2 books, and can't wait to stick my nose into the one I wasn't expecting to have a follow up. :D

Since I'm back into Capitan Alatriste, I decided to continue even though I didn't finish my goal by Origins. Picked up right where I left off and am about 2/3 of the way through The Sun Over Breda

Since Scott mentioned this, I decided to go with it. Probably won't get finished with the whole series by OGC (since it's Friday), but I'll have less than 2 books to go. I've finished up The Sun Over Breda, and am 50 pages shy of finishing The Kings Gold. Should be finished with that tonight, then I'll start The Cavalier in the Yellow Doublet.

Pirates is now half way done be I'm a little bummed since this is the latest one that's been translated (so I'll probably have to wait till around 2015 for the next one to be translated :( )

Hmm, I apparently didn't mention this, but I finished off all the Capitan Alatriste books that've been translated (thus far). Started on a book I bought down in GA but it's awful (it sounded good, "Georgia Ghosts" but each 'story' is a page or two long and do little more than telling a short synopsis of someone meeting/seeing a ghost).
